There’s a new day dawning

OK, so maybe the title is a little grandiose, but to give you an idea how much the web has changed in the past few years, check out the home page to the Twitter Pack wiki:

First, notice that the password for editing the site and authorizing others to do so is in a very large font at the top of the page. How’s that for democratic? And I like this: “No one has ‘forgotten ‘or ‘left out’ anything. You just haven’t added it yet.” In other words, put up or shut up.

This kind of participatory communications is not new, but I thought this example really brought home what a huge change this is from the static web pages of yore.

  1. That said, I really don’t like the idea of a “Twitter Pack” to get people started. Twitter changes complexion and value MANY times in the course of building your tribe. Start with someone else’s ’suggestions’, and you don’t understand all the ways the tool is useful.

To be honest, my list is getting unmanageable. I’m about to do some major pruning, pulling people that seemed interesting at the time, but don’t really provide any value for me. I will always reply and interact with replies — and I typically add and follow people who do. But for now, my Tweetstream is being overrun with things that are clogging the messages I would like to see. Saddling someone with a Starter Pack that instantaneously adds people who are valuable to someone else might not be the best idea.

For what it’s worth, this was debated actively on Twitter, and I lost.

  2. Ike,

I agree with you. Didn’t want this post to be misinterpreted as an endorsement of Twitter Packs.
