Great advice and insight. Unfortunately I was doing a lot of what you told us to stay away from. Will readjust direction and focus. Thanks

Comparing aggressive following (that's what I call amassing followers) to a collection of a million thumbtacks -- brilliant!

The people who I stick with (really no pun intended) are the ones who I've gotten to know over time. Sure my reach isn't massive, but the depth of my relationships with people I've met is strong enough to co-host events, share parenting advice in a meaningful way and even launch business ventures.

I have an experimental account that has nearly 3000 followers. It's basically worthless because I'm just a random headline there clamoring for attention amidst everyone else. Whereas at @freerangemom, I know people and they know me. ::shrug:: I'd rather have relationships than try to be a mini-broadcast station.

Oh, I don't think all celebrities are taking advantage of their status to amass huge numbers. I'm just thinking of all those times I've heard someone say "I joined Twitter to follow Shaq and MC Hammer!"

Plus, I wouldn't put it past some celebrity users to spend longer than average trying to work out the concept of "following." That button is awful tiny.

However, in your defense, that comment definitively proves that John Mayer wins the Douche Bag of the Millennium Award.

Nice advice, very sensible. I always try to do less rather than more, and cut the chit-chat. Also, never get into a twit fight with a twit :-)
