I rescued from cassette this talk that Marshall McLuhan gave at Johns Hopkins University in the mid 1970s. I have not found an audio file of this talk anywhere online. So far as I know it's an original contribution to the archive of McLuhan audio. Enjoy. Rare McLuhan Audio

Hi Joel... very thought provoking article. I love thinking about the broader social effect of social media (on families, relationships, work life, etc.) and your post does a great job in surfacing great points on this. There is certainly a new tension between "be here now" and the fragmented attention phenomenon we see with real-time media (text msgs, tweets, FB statuses, etc.).

BTW... I'm a big McLuhan fan as well and would love to see what he would say today about social media (I made a comment in that regard on my blog a while back - http://bit.ly/McLuhan ).

Cheers,
Marcel

[...] socialized blog » McLuhan, Socrates and Edith Wharton On Social Media Some great quotes and an intersting perspective. Marshall McLuhan in particular is worth revisiting because his perspective on the end of print culture and the global village are highly pertinent. I keep meaning to find the time to write a post on this, tied in to the notion of story-telling.
Thanks for this original article !

On the corporation's initiative. I wonder whether a "corporation initiated" (i.e controlled by corporations for the benefit of a corporation) social media initiative is an oxymoron.

A social media initiative comes, by definition, from communities no ? I'm not advocating corp to stay away but rather to leverage initiatives already going on in their target tribes and find synergies with communities.
