One of the most brilliant blog post I have read.
Perhaps it's best left to those outside the echo chamber of marketers, bloggers, advertisers etc to make sense of new media.
The 1% that create content have their nose to close to the keyboard to see the big picture.

I have often wondered what Mr. McLuhan would have had to say about social media? Do you really think he had foreseen it coming?

Do we have to understand social media to understand both what we consume and what we create?

Thanks for the brain food.

Homo Modernus, Tractatus Philosophicus.
If in a parallel universe Ludwig Wittgenstein and Marshall McLuhan had married, their robot child would have created something like this animation. We hope you will enjoy it.

I rescued from cassette this talk that Marshall McLuhan gave at Johns Hopkins University in the mid 1970s. I have not found an audio file of this talk anywhere online. So far as I know it's an original contribution to the archive of McLuhan audio. Enjoy.<a href="http://starlarvae.blogspot.com/2008/10/rare-mcluhan-audio.html" rel="nofollow"> Rare McLuhan Audio</a>

Hi Joel... very thought provoking article. I love thinking about the broader social effect of social media (on families, relationships, work life, etc.) and your post does a great job in surfacing great points on this. There is certainly a new tension between "be here now" and the fragmented attention phenomenon we see with real-time media (text msgs, tweets, FB statuses, etc.).

BTW... I'm a big McLuhan fan as well and would love to see what he would say today about social media (I made a comment in that regard on my blog a while back - http://bit.ly/McLuhan ).

Cheers,
Marcel

[...] socialized blog » McLuhan, Socrates and Edith Wharton On Social Media Some great quotes and an intersting perspective. Marshall McLuhan in particular is worth revisiting because his perspective on the end of print culture and the global village are highly pertinent. I keep meaning to find the time to write a post on this, tied in to the notion of story-telling.
