you've helped me by talking about my work and helping out when i need advice. you are a wonderful and caring person, and i am richer for knowing you. :O) twitter has brought so many people from around the world together. and the atmosphere is so optimistic there that its infectious. i just hope twitter fixes its outages soon, because i love it (and in their case i give them more patience than most sites)

Very nice post, Joel.

I agree that there is much joy to be found in helping out, offering encouragement, or lending support simply for the sake of doing it, without expecting anything in return.

It's been interesting, especially on Facebook and Twitter, to see these platforms used in ways that bring out the best (and sometimes worst) in people. I have been witness to some of the scenarios you have mentioned, and countless others, where someone simply poses a thought or question or need, and the replies start pouring in within minutes. I've watched some pretty cool relationships connect, take form, and grow - all right before my eyes from the tweets I see.

You, and many of those you are connected with, have been good examples to follow in how you all interact with other users and offer encouragement - THANKS!

An inspiring blog post! I love the 'social web' and all it has to offer ... but mostly, I love the people that participate and offer those things. You're obviously one of them, so kudos to you, and I hope you're able to inspire many more to do the same.

BTW, found you through @sorenj, whose two blogs (http://puntiglio.com/blog/ and http://puntiglio.com/bookshelf/) are also extremely inspiring a great deal of the time.

Joel, what a generous thought. Your attitude is what makes the world a more human (and humane) place. Thanks also for all your help and support with my blog. One day, I'm going to ask you about Twitter.

Joel, you've been a huge help to me as I've embarked on this social media adventure. I agree completely with your comments about Twitter. I've been simply awed by how helpful that community is -- which is part of why I miss it when it's down! Thanks for the great reminder to give back freely. I'm inspired to do this all the time by you and others in this space.
