Formal communication should never be replaced by informal expression. just like academic papers aren't replaced by blogs.
Actually it's so obvious I have a hard time considering those claims seriously. (and I'm a big supporter of blogging vs. traditional media)

I think of blogging as a craft, a powerful tool, and a refreshing alternative to the powers that be in mainstream media.
But the tool alone is no guarantee enough that anything great, meaningful, thoughtful, insightful will be produced.

That's what hard, disciplined, professional work does.
(regardless of the organisational structure you belong to)
It's okay to have opinion, but opinion alone as you once pointed out is merely expression: graffiti.

Certainly no replacement for formal communication.

I blogged about this in March. The press release is NOT dead! http://www.speakmediablog.com/2008/03/press-release-is-not-dead-it-has.html

You are so right on! What's dead is poor writing and/or poor media targeting. But, releases can be one of the best tools we have for getting our message out if you do it right!
